People always ask us: “When’s the best time to come?”
The honest answer: It depends on you. Whether you’re looking for a romantic adults-only hideaway in spring or a cozy boho-design retreat in autumn, every month speaks its own quiet language.
Spring couples want wildflowers and birdsong. Summer people want heat and long evenings. Autumn lovers chase romance and golden colors. Winter types want solitude and woodsmoke in the air.
All of them are right.
Every month feels different. Here’s what each one actually looks like at ABBADIA WINE RELAIS — what’s happening, what you’ll experience, and which kind of couple it’s perfect for.
April: Spring, Flowers & Spa
Mood:
Everything blooms. The hills turn impossibly green. Wildflowers everywhere — poppies in the fields, wisteria climbing walls, roses blooming. April showers are real, but they are soft, romantic and make everything more beautiful, think rainbows spanning across the valley.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
Rainy days mean spa days. We can arrange private massages, sauna and salt therapies – or book you at nearby thermal spas in Bagno Vignoni or Bagni San Filippo.
Some couples spend rainy afternoons here at ABBADIA: reading, watching rain fall on the vineyards. The sound is perfect. The air smells like wet earth and flowers.
When the sky clears, Val d’Orcia is all yours: set out ofor hikes, village wandering, bike tours and long slow car drives through the greenest hills of the year.
Who it’s for:
Couples who see beauty in change and don’t mind occasional rain. Anyone who wants Tuscany without crowds.
Our take:
April is beautiful, just come with a flexible plan. Spa day. Museums. Books. Wine. The usual Tuscan fallbacks.
May: The Birdsong Month
Mood:
Peak spring. The landscape is at its greenest. Flowers everywhere. Everything is alive, blooming, singing.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
Birdsong. So much birdsong.
Mornings sound like a symphony — nightingales, hoopoes, golden orioles, bee-eaters, cuckoos. We’ve counted over 40 species from breakfast.
We set up your private breakfast table in the olive grove. You sit under ancient trees, surrounded by singing birds, eating home-made bread, yogurt, fruit and local cheese, and you think: this is what mornings should be.
Who it’s for:
Nature lovers. Birdwatchers. Couples who want mornings that feel like a meditation.
Our take:
May is magic. If you love mornings, if you love nature, if you want to feel alive — then your best time to visit Tuscany is May.
June: Firefly Magic
Mood:
Summer arrives properly. Warm days, perfect evenings, the world glowing.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
Fireflies. Thousands of them. Every night.
In June, just after sunset, is when “lucciole” appear — first a few, then dozens, then the whole vineyard blinking with tiny floating lights. We tell every guest: walk down to the vineyards after dinner. Bring wine if you want.
Some people stand and watch. Some lie in the grass. Everyone takes photos – they never work. You end up putting your phone away and just being there, admiring nature’s beauty.
It lasts about three weeks — June to early July. Then they’re gone – until next year.
Who it’s for:
Romantics. Honeymooners. Anyone who wants to experience true magic.
Our take:
If you can time your visit for mid-June, do it. Fireflies are one of those experiences you’ll tell people about for years. “We saw fireflies in Tuscany.” And they’ll be jealous. Rightly.
July: Long Days, Long Dinners
Mood:
Classic Tuscan summer. Golden fields, deep blue skies, slow afternoons, endless evenings.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
This is the month for our romantic picnics and full moon dinners.
Romantic picnics: We set up a blanket in the vineyard or wildflower field. Charcuterie, cheese, bread, our wine. Views forever. Just you two.
Private sunset dinners: When the full moon falls in July (and it usually does), we set up a private dinner at our vantage point. Four courses freshly prepared by Sarah, candlelight, our wine, and the moon rising over the valley so bright you barely need lights.
In between: Pool season. Long swims. Long naps. Books you finally finish.
Who it’s for:
Romantic couples, honeymooners. Summer people. Pool people. Everyone who loves heat, sun, and long, lazy days.
Our take:
July is peak Tuscany. It’s beautiful and hot. If you love summer, this is your heaven.
August: Stars & Crickets
Mood:
The hottest month. But the nights — the nights are extraordinary. It just can’t feel more summer.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
Stars. Endless stars.
This is the best month for stargazing. Clear skies. The Perseids meteor shower peaks mid-month. The Milky Way looks painted on.
We set up blankets on the terrace. You lie down. Look up to count shooting stars. You’ll lose count soon, but never mind, keep watching.
And the only sound you hear are crickets – a steady, hypnotic chorus that fills the night. And by now, you know why we always say: true hideaways whisper.
Who it’s for:
Stargazers. Night owls. Couples who want summer at full intensity.
Our take:
Yes, it’s hot. Yes, it’s busy. But the nights more than make up for it. If you love the night sky, come in August.
September: The Mystic Month
Mood:
Some mornings begin in mist — that mystical, beautiful Tuscan haze that settles in the valley and wraps the hills like in a dream. Then it lifts slowly. Still perfect weather for everything – pool, travelling, hiking. Grape harvest begins (Link: /organic-wine-making-tuscany).
Highlight at ABBADIA:
September is THE sunrise watch month. The mornings are cool and clear. We have this spectacular view – the sun slowly rises behind the Apennines, turning our valley into liquid gold.
We set up a spot on the hilltop. Blankets. Hot tea. You watch the world wake up. Some mornings there’s mist in the valley that slowly burns off. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you quiet.
And private sunset dinners? They continue. We set up a table for two on the vantage point. Four courses. Our wines. The valley turning pink, then purple, then dark. Just you, endless views, and the day melting into dark blue nights.
Who it’s for:
Everyone. Truly.
Food people. Wine lovers. Photographers. Romantics. Anyone who wants the “perfect” Tuscany.
Our take:
If you can only come once, come in September. It’s Slow Travel in Val d’Orcia at its absolute best. Sarah’s favorite month for a reason.
October: Colorful leaves, Hikes & Wine
Mood:
The hills blaze in orange, red, and gold. Truffles begin to surface. New wine quietly ferments in the cellars. October is full of scent and color — Tuscany in full autumn mood.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
This is the month for long, scenic hikes (Link: /hiking-val-dorcia) and outdoor adventures — biking through rolling hills, horseback rides at golden hour, slow wine tastings.
The trails are perfect now — not too hot, not too cold. Leaves glow in every shade of autumn. The woods smell of damp earth, moss, and mushrooms.
Who it’s for:
Active couples. Hikers. Bikers. Food lovers chasing truffles.
Our take:
October is the ultimate outdoor month — colorful, aromatic, energetic. If that kind of beauty speaks to you, October is your month.
November: Quiet Return
Mood:
Olive harvest in early November. Tourists mostly gone. The land rests. Cool, misty mornings some days. Beautiful others. In any case: Peaceful.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
November is for relaxed sightseeing in Val d’Orcia. The towns are empty. Pienza has virtually no crowds. Montepulciano turns quiet. You can actually see things without fighting for space.
Museums have no lines. Restaurants have tables. The thermal baths at Bagno Vignoni are steaming in the cool air — dramatic and perfect.
November is perfect for spa day experiences. Then it’s mostly about rest, wine, long meals, and having Tuscany to yourselves.
November is olive harvest, too. Hand-picked from our trees. Freshly pressed, directly from the mill, shiny green hue, tasting so fresh it burns your throat – in the best way.
Who it’s for:
Introverts. People who want culture without crowds. Couples recovering from busy seasons. Romantic spa days.
Our take:
November is underrated. It’s grey some days, but it’s peaceful and beautiful and yours. If you like having places to yourself, come in November.
December: Cozy & Celebration
Mood:
Christmas markets. Village decorations. Nativity scenes everywhere. Cold but festive. Tuscany goes full-cozy in December – and so do we.
Highlight at ABBADIA:
Sarah and I, grew up in Switzerland with real snow, real cheese traditions. December makes us nostalgic, so we bring a little Switzerland to Tuscany. Not just for sentiment. Because it tastes ridiculously good.
We set up a fondue dinner in the courtyard under the stars. Yes, outside. Yes, in December. With heaters, thick furs, mulled wine, and a big pot of melted cheese for dipping bread and fruits. You dip, you talk, you laugh, you look up at a sky full of cold, bright stars.
If you’ve never had real Swiss fondue, this is your moment. Everyone should eat a fondue at least once in their life. Preferably here.
During the days, we send you to Christmas markets. Siena has a beautiful one. Arezzo and Montepulciano too. You wander through stalls selling ceramics, wine, local crafts. Drink vin brulé (mulled wine). Eat roasted chestnuts and candy.
Then back to ABBADIA for a fire, more wine, and early bedtime.
Who it’s for:
Christmas people. Cozy lovers. Couples celebrating we-time.
Our take:
December at ABBADIA is intimate, it makes for a true romantic retreat. We usually only have a few rooms booked. It feels like a private house party with friends. If that sounds good, come. If you want bustling energy, wait for spring.
